Getting A Car Insurance – What To Ask For

An auto insurance policy is a must have for all vehicle-owners and with good reason too – you’ll never know when you’ll get into an accident which can cause damage to yourself or to others, or both. Having a wide coverage would cushion you from possible financial loss that comes with paying for the damages.

There are six different kinds of coverage including medical, property, liability, and others. However, not all states require for a car owner to have all six. If you are loaning for your car purchase, check with the financing company if they have insurance requirements. Chances are, they will offer auto insurance along with your loan scheme.

All auto insurance policies cover at least six months, with others extending to a year. It does expire so you need to make sure that you are aware of this. Your insurance company will remind you of this via post or telephone if you need to renew your policy and pay for your premium.

Insurance premiums are indeed expensive but you can get discounts if you are an especially careful and responsible driver. When shopping around for an insurance company, ask about special discounts based on your excellent driving records.

For example, if you have not suffered from or caused any vehicle related accident in the last three years, or have not been ticketed for any moving violations in the same span then you are most probably a strong candidate for a lower premium. You can also get discounts if you are a driver over 50 years of age or a college student away from home. Other preferred clients may have taken driver training courses or defensive driving courses. If your vehicle is equipped with air bags, anti lock braking system, or anti theft devices, you might get lower rates too. Of course, if you have been their client for a long time, that would really be advantageous since they already know your history.

Always get quotes from different insurance companies. Just because you have been a client of one insurer for a long time does not mean you are not allowed to look around. Although this does not necessarily mean you are withdrawing form this insurance company, knowing of better deals somewhere else may be your leverage in acquiring bigger discounts. You can even just shop around on the internet if you prefer not to be bugged by insurance agents on a personal basis.

When looking for a good insurance company and it is your first time as a bona fide vehicle owner, you can ask for advice from your friends and family. Some websites also offer help on finding the right insurer for your vehicle and comparisons of different providers.

It might also be better if you allow a higher rate of deductible. Deductible is the amount you have to shell out personally when an accident occurs, before the insurance policy is processed. The reason is that having a higher deductible would mean lower premium rates for you to pay. Just in case, make sure that you have your deductible covered by your emergency money.
