Making Your Own Environmental-Friendly Car Care Solutions

Environmental awareness has led everyone to find ways on how to use non-synthetic, non-toxic ways in meeting our daily needs. There is now a whole gamut of “green” products available in various stores and supermarkets to take care of everything from washing the laundry, cleaning different areas of our houses, to cleaning various appliances we have and even in maintaining our cars. However, most of these products do not come cheap and we need to find more affordable ways to clean while making sure that what we use does not damage Mother Earth.

Here are some organic mixes that we can use to keep our vehicles dirt free, odor free and polished.

1. Baking soda. This all purpose ingredient that we actually can use for cooking is a hero in removing stains and unpleasant odors from our cars. If you have something funky aromatizing your car’s interior, sprinkle baking soda on your floor mats and carpets and leave it on for a whole week. The baking soda will absorb the smell; afterwards, vacuum off the residue. For filth on the exterior of the car, use a cup of baking soda dissolved in a gallon of warm water to wash it off. Aside from cleaning the grime build up, this also prevents rust from forming on the car body.

2. Vinegar. Like baking soda, vinegar also contains components that can help in the maintenance of our vehicles. Dilute three cups of white distilled vinegar in a cup of water and use as windshield cleaner. Car carpet shampoo can be made via mixing one-fourth cup of vinegar, one-fourth cup of ammonia, and one gallon of water. For hard to remove carpet stains, use one part vinegar mixed with two parts water and apply to stain. Let stand for about twenty minutes and then blot with a dry towel. Polish your leather and vinyl car parts with a mixture of linseed oil and vinegar. The linseed oil should first be boiled and let cool before putting in a cup of vinegar; apply with a soft and lint-free cloth. To wax the body of your car, purchase carnauba wax and linseed oil. Melt one fourth cup of carnauba wax, half a cup of linseed oil and half a cup of white distilled vinegar. Cool the mixture and wax and buff the car’s body with it.

3. Charcoal. To prevent bad odors from ever permeating your car interior again, put a bit of coal into a tight lidded container with a few holes on top and place under the seat. This takes care of everything from cigarette smoke smells to mildew stench.

4. Ammonia. Take care of thick, stuck mud and muck on the floor carpets and floor mats with ammonia – two cups diluted in a gallon of water. Scour clean with a brush; wear gloves to protect your hands from the ammonia smell.

Sometimes it just takes a bit of research to find environmentally-smart solutions to help in the maintenance of your car. Try these tips at home and be on your way to keeping your car clean and taking care of nature.
