Vehicular Safety - Dealing With Aggressive Drivers On The Road

It is inevitable that at some point in our driving lives that we encounter aggressive drivers. The one thing that will keep us safe from these types of drivers is to stay away from driving all together but that would be impossible. However, we can always try to avoid direct confrontation, especially if we are driving alone or we are on a road that only a few vehicles pass.

If you notice an offensive driver on the road, make every attempt to get out of their way. If you are in front of the said driver, and he keeps on trying to cut you off or honks his horn at you every few seconds, let him pass. While you may want to keep your pride by staying on the lane or you want to assert your right to be on the road since you are keeping to the speed limit and obeying traffic rules, the safer bet is to not be this driver’s challenge. You may also attempt to speed up and just leave him behind but this may pose more risk as you may all the more catch his attention.

Make sure that you are safely harnessed by your safety seat belt because this will protect you in case you need to make a sudden maneuver to avoid a crash or if the aggressive driver bumps into your rear end. In case you let the vehicle pass and the driver chooses to cruise along by your side, avoid making eye contact as this could further any attempts on his part to be hostile towards you. Keep your cool at all times; there is no reason to fight him off even if you see him gesturing to you through your mirrors or your peripheral vision.

Check the car plates and memorize it; additionally, try to recognize the model and the make of the vehicle. This will help you in case the driver hits you and runs off because you would need a description to report the incident to the proper authorities. If your cellular phone is at your reach, dial emergency numbers and state your name, your license plate numbers and your location plus the license plates of the vehicle and its make and model. In case you were able to escape the hostilities of the aggressive driver and you learn that he got involved in a crash with another vehicle, perform your civic duties and report the driving behavior you witnessed from this person to the responding policemen.

Typically, you would be more agreeable to letting this aggressive behavior if you have passengers on board and especially with children in your vehicle. Hopefully, the aggressive driver thinks so too and leaves you alone as soon as you let him through. Still, being alone in your vehicle is not reason enough to not think of your own person’s safety. It is not your place to put yourself at risk because some driver chose to be hot headed on the road.
